Building a Healthy Workplace

With offices reopening and people going back to work, health is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. How can we be building healthier workplaces for our companies? We have some thoughts.

Flexible Work Space

Having the ability to sit, stand, or get fresh air can make all the difference in the health and wellness of employees. It’s no secret that sitting at a desk all day has negative effects on a person’s mood, posture, health, and productivity. Providing the ability to work from different spots in a space allows people to stand or move and protects their well-being. Incorporating things like standing desks and outdoor workspaces can be very beneficial to employees.

Movement Matters

Some companies choose to incorporate things like gyms or exercise space in order to promote movement and health in their employees. They understand that overall wellness leads to more productivity, happier employees, and fewer sick days taken. Encourage meetings and phone calls to be taken while walking, or regular breaks to stand and get away from desks a few times each day. If you don’t have a gym on campus, discounted gym memberships or healthcare incentives to those who are active can encourage movement as well.

Incorporate Some Green

No, we’re not talking about money here. Bringing in living plants can improve air quality in the office, which is important because poor air quality can contribute to poor concentration, allergies, and more. Live plants in the workplace can reduce tension and anxiety, as well as reduce noise levels in the office. The color green has been shown to promote relaxation and creativity, so incorporating this color throughout your space can have a positive impact on employees.

Cultivate Office Culture

You can have the most beautiful, functional office in the world, but if your employees don’t feel seen and valued, none of it truly matters. It’s important to recognize accomplishments, offer benefits, and allow employees to have some fun. Create a space where employees can go to socialize, grab a snack, and toss ideas around together. Allow them to decorate their spaces, or bring in dogs to raise morale and reduce stress. Find what works best for your company and run with it!
